May 31st, 08 : Sigman and Rowley Still Rule Springport PDF Print E-mail

By: SMS correspondent, Michelle Sprague

Performance Automotive NW Sportsman driver, Scott Sigman, continued his reign in the Sportsman division by scoring his third win in four weeks. East Lansing’s Jack Koone Jr. made a stop at the Springport Motor Speedway, set fast time, but didn’t have anything for Sigman in the 20-lap feature. It was an all Leslie front row, as Dave Thorburn and Nate Moon brought the field down to the green, with Moon shown as the lap one leader. Sigman wasted no time in making his bid for the lead, with Koone in tow. The duo broke away from the field, with Okemos’ Steve Oberst joining the top three, but Oberst was never able to reel in the top two. Moon held down the fourth spot, while Charlotte’s Matt Kirchen, Bubber Patrick, of Stockbridge, and Thorburn rounded out the field. Sigman made his second trip of the night to the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle, having won the heat race as well.

Edson Rowley III, of Jackson, took another win in the Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock division, with rookies James Hammond and Michigan Center’s Marq Eaton taking heat win honors. At the drop of the green for the 20-lap feature, Eaton jumped out into the lead, with Eaton Rapid’s J.T. Leach tacked to his bumper. Leach made the pass, leaving Rowley to duke it out with Eaton for the second spot, while Charlotte’s Todd Metz Sr. caught the leaders. Leach, Rowley, and Metz ran away from Eaton, with Rowley working his way around Leach with six laps to go, while Metz slipped around Leach as well. Metz tried to reel in Rowley for the win, but it was Rowley, Metz, Leach, Eaton and a stellar run by Lansing’s Bill McBride for fifth.

Dimondale’s Kyle Drake drove to the win in the Pure Stock 20-lap feature on the big 3/8-mile. On the start, Drake charged to the front, to lead lap two, while Munith’s Matt Patrick and Jackson’s Jeremy Lutz battled for the second position. Lutz took the spot away at the halfway mark, leaving Patrick to fight off Concord’s CJ Ewing for third. Ewing and Patrick swapped the position a couple of times, with Patrick taking the upper hand when it counted most. Ewing came home fourth, with front-wheel drive competitor, Bryan Jenks, of Holt, nailing down the fifth spot. Drake (RWD) and Jenks (FWD) both made a stop in the Winner’s Circle, sponsored by Corrigan Oil. Lutz and Jenks shared the heat win.

It was a family affair in the MCR Dwarf division, as the McManman’s came home first and third in the Dwarf 20-lap feature. With four lead changes, Mike McManman Sr. had his work cut out for him, as Brian Insley took the lead at the drop of the green. Jon Wylie took command, promptly received a speeding ticket and was sent to the rear. Eric Hoffman inherited the lead and put some real estate between himself and the field on the restart. McManman Sr. methodically picked off one car after another, to find himself behind Hoffman. McManman Jr. tacked himself to his Dad’s bumper and the two reeled in Hoffman to challenge for the lead. The McManman Sr. took away the top spot with six laps to go, as Junior Gould and Jon Wylie, from the tail of the field, held down the fourth and fifth spots. At the stripe, it was McManman Sr., Hoffman, McManman Jr., Gould, and J. Wylie as the top five. Jim Miller and Hoffman took heat wins.

The VROA division had kind of a rocky start to their 20-lap feature, losing three cars, on two complete restarts. Once they got underway, Rockford’s Mike Becker took the lead, with Bob Martin, of Kalamazoo, diving under him to take the spot away. Vicksburg’s Larry Mollohan took a look to the low side of Martin at the halfway mark, with Mollohan taking the lead with five laps to go. Mollohan went on to win the feature, with Martin, Becker, Jamie Gritter, and Sparta’s Rob Parker rounding out the top five. Parker and Mollohan also took heat wins.
