Leslie’s Ken Buchner showed he has what it takes, winning his first
ever feature in a Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modified at the
Springport Motor Speedway. On the start, point leader Earl Miles, of
Hanover, got hurled into the backstretch wall, ending his bid for win
number four. Ken Buchner had a stellar run, as Charlotte’s Bill Butler,
Horton’s Darel Woolsey, Leslie’s Craig Willett, and Marshall’s Justin
Kazmar gave chase. Butler and Woolsey had to be content playing
follow-the-leader as Buchner was able to hold them off. Kazmar looked
to the outside of Willett, bringing Charlotte’s Wayne Haughton along
with him. The duo made the pass, setting their sights on Woolsey.
Caution waved as Woolsey retired to the pit with a smoking car, setting
Kazmar up for a run at Butler and the leader, Buchner, with three laps
to go. Buchner was able to pull away from Butler on the restart,
preserving his lead, while Butler had to hold off Kazmar who issued a
bid for second. At the line, it was Buchner, Butler, Kazmar, Haughton
and Willett. The heat race win went to Miles.
The Performance NW Sportsmans saw twelve competitors test themselves
and their machines on the big 3/8-mile asphalt oval. Dennis Roys, of
Troy, took the early lead, but ran laps under his qualifying time, and
was sent to the rear, handing the lead over to Leslie’s Nate Moon.
Okemos’ Steve Oberst and Leslie’s Ron Heeney were going at it tooth and
nail when the two got together, sending Heeney spinning into the
infield. Both were sent to the rear of the field, setting up the
restart with Moon still shown as the leader. On the restart, Mason’s
Scott Sigman took the lead, with Holt’s Chuck Ammerman settling into
the third spot, followed by Leslie’s Dave Thorburn and Mason’s Ian
Sprague. Heeney worked his way up into the top five, sitting behind
Moon on a restart after a caution. Heeney lost a left front tire,
bringing out the caution once again. With time being a factor, the race
was shortened to 15 laps, with Sigman still shown as the race leader on
the restart. Moon was running in second, followed by Ammerman, with
Thorburn being pursued by Sprague through every turn. Ammerman lost a
motor on lap 13, bringing out the early checker. Sigman made another
trip to the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle, with Moon, Thorburn, Sprague,
and Roys rounding out the top five. Thorburn and Heeney scored heat
wins for the division.
Twenty Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks took to the track, with one
special Pony driver being honored at intermission. Art Kimbal, of
Marshall, was awarded the 2007 Sportsman of the Year for Springport
Motor Speedway, as he didn’t receive the award at the banquet last
season. All drivers gathered on the front stretch to celebrate Art’s
58th year of racing. By the way, Art is 86 years old, the same as his
car number. What a remarkable man, truly dedicated to the sport. To
kick off his special night, Kimbal took the win in the four car dash,
and led the majority of the first regular heat, with Charlotte’s Todd
Metz Jr. coming home the winner. Kimbal also led the first three laps
of the feature, but Jackson’s Edson Rowley III came blasting up through
the field to take the lead on lap four. Rowley scraped the wall on the
front stretch, giving Charlotte’s Todd Metz Sr. the window of
opportunity he needed, and Metz took the lead on lap five. Charlotte’s
Steve Wrenn and Lansing’s Misty Allen were duking it out for third,
with Matt Vainner sitting in the fifth position. Lansing’s Bill McBride
was on the move, taking the third spot on lap eight. JT Leach made his
way around Allen and Wrenn to take away the fourth spot. At the line,
it was Metz Sr., Rowley, McBride, Leach and Wrenn. Kimbal, Metz Jr. and
Lansing’s Lex Jarecki took heat wins.
The Pure Stock division, once again, resembled an endurance race,
with caution waving three times, before the first lap. Flagman, Doug
Allen, finally had them line up single-file, and the race was on. Kyle
Drake was handed the lead as Spring Arbor’s Jonathan Smith and
Dansville’s Mark Carson got together a number of times, bringing out
the black flag for Carson and a trip to the rear for Smith. K. Drake
was running just ahead of brother, Spencer Drake, with Jimmy Tucker, of
Mt. Clemens, running in third. Charlotte’s Pastor Randy Royston held
down the fourth spot, with Smith running fifth. The race was shortened
due to a time limitation, with K. Drake taking the RWD win, while
Tucker took the FWD win. Eleven cars started this race, and only six
cars were left on the track when the checker waved. Tucker won the FWD
heat, while S. Drake took the RWD heat.

The Springport Motor Speedway would like to thank the Charlotte Auto
Dealers, Beacon Sales, Candy Ford and Team One Chevrolet, for their part in
helping to promote their dealerships and the Springport Motor Speedway. These
dealerships provided their customers and race fans with 3000 free tickets to
enjoy an exciting night of short track racing at the Springport Motor Speedway.
It was great that these dealerships came onboard for the evening and the staff
and management thanks you.
Trudging on through the rain, no sound system (temporarily), and multiple
wrecks, the show must go on. The Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock feature winner,
Charlotte’s Todd Metz Sr. made it two in a row, putting a big dent in Jackson’s
Edson Rowley III’s dominance. Rowley came home in second, followed by a steadily
improving Bill McBride, of Lansing. Garry Sanfilippo and Steve Wrenn, both from
Charlotte, rounded out the top five. Wrenn and Metz Sr. scored heat wins for the
evening.
And rain it did! The Pure Stock feature was slated to run next and a bad
wreck, involving Lansing’s Ian Schafer, Holt’s Bryan Jenks, and Eaton Rapid’s
Jordan Rodgers marred the 20-lap feature. A big thank you to Willie Trudgeon and
crew for their efforts in the massive clean-up. In spite of the rain,
Dimondale’s Kyle Drake drove into the Corrigan Oil Victory Lane, over
Dansville’s Mark Carson, Spring Arbor’s Jonathan Smith, Concord’s CJ Ewing and
Mt. Clemen’s Jimmy Tucker. Tucker was the highest finishing Front Wheel Drive
competitor, taking the FWD heat win as well. Carson scored the RWD heat win.
The Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans took to the track, with Mason’s
Ian Sprague taking the lead on the green. Williamston’s Jordan Harvey made the
pass on Sprague, with Okemos’s Steve Oberst in hot pursuit. Mason’s Scott Sigman
made his charge to the front, challenging Oberst for the lead. Sigman took the
win from his ninth starting position and thanked the track crew for a job well
done. Oberst, Harvey, Leslie’s Nate Moon, and Dennis Roys (Dixie Motor Speedway)
rounded out the top five. Sigman swept the evening by taking the Four Car Dash,
while Roys won the heat.
The Vavoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds saw Charlotte’s Bill Butler set
fast time, but Hanover’s Earl Miles took the first heat win, leading all of the
laps, while from just up the road, Springport’s Dale Eglon made his return and
scored the second heat win. Miles scored the feature win (on his Mom’s birthday)
holding off last week’s feature winner, Perry Davenport of Charlotte,
Vermontville’s Leroy Ellis (the Wild Child 100 winner at the Spartan Speedway),
Charlotte’s Dan Loughan (who worked his way to the front after starting from the
rear twice) and Leslie’s Ken Buchner.
The VROA feature saw Larry Mollohan hold off a hard-charging Samantha
Jansen for the Vintage Racing Organization of America win and a trip to the
Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle. Lou Caposey, Rick Nelson, and Bob Martin came home
third through fifth respectively. Fred Otterbien and Caposey took heat wins for
the evening.
Randy Kretzinger Jr. took home all the marbles for his win in the
Spectator drags.

Charlotte’s Perry Davenport drove
into the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle at the Springport Motor Speedway, after a
hard fought battle with Hanover’s Earl Miles. At the drop of the green, the
Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds saw Angola regular, David Winans, of
Tekonsha, jump out to take the early lead, with Leslie’s Ken Buchner sitting in
second. Miles and Davenport charged to the front to sit one and two by lap five.
Charlotte’s Dan Loughan took over the third position from Winans, as Miles and
Davenport pulled away from the field. Davenport looked high and low for a way
around Miles, sticking his nose under Miles, but not able to make it stick. On
lap fifteen, Miles slipped up the track a bit, opening the window of opportunity
for Davenport. Davenport slipped under Miles to take the lead away, as Loughan,
Buchner, and Eaton Rapid’s Tommy Trudgen tried to keep the lead duo in their
crosshairs. At the checker, it was Davenport, Miles, Loughan, Buchner, and
Trudgen. Miles scored the heat win for the evening.
The Performance
Automotive NW Sportsmans saw Leslie’s Ron Heeney take his second win in a row,
but the real show was back in the field as Mason’s Scott Sigman made his way up
through the field to try and keep pace with the leader. Leslie’s Nate Moon and
Charlotte’s Matt Kirchen went at it tooth and nail for the third position, with
Kirchen making the pass on Moon with five laps to go. Leslie’s Dave Thorburn
found the right combination, after starting scratch on the field, and reeled in
Lansing’s Al Williams, then went after Moon and Kirchen, but ran out of laps. At
the stripe, it was Heeney, Sigman, Kirchen, Moon, and Thorburn. Heeney also took
the heat win for the evening.
It was an all Front Wheel Drive Pure Stock
night, as the Rear Wheel Drive drivers were preparing their cars for a big
Sunday invitational at Springport’s sister track, the Spartan Speedway. Holt’s
Bryan Jenks (the birthday boy) cleaned up as he grabbed the heat win, as well as
the feature win. Charlotte’s Pastor Randy Royston, Mt. Clemen’s Jimmy Tucker,
and Alva Clark rounded out the division.
The Boss Snow Equipment Pony
Stock division consistently puts on a great show, and Saturday was no exception.
Lansing’s Bill McBride ended Edson Rowley III’s reign as the qualifying king by
setting fast time of the night. At the drop of the green, Charlotte’s Steve
Wrenn catapulted into the lead, with Todd Metz Sr. (Yogi) and McBride moving
quickly up through the pack. Metz took the lead on lap four, bringing McBride
along with him. An altercation sent Rowley to the tail of the field, but he
clawed his way back into contention, to sit in the top five by lap nine. Metz
opened up a pretty good lead over McBride, who tried to whittle away at the gap
between them. MI Center’s Marq Eaton was unable to catch McBride and Metz, but
did manage to hold off Rowley for a third place finish. James Hammond, of
Toledo, OH, held down the fifth position. Metz scored his first-ever feature
win, ending Rowley’s six-in-a-row winning streak. Heat wins went to Wrenn and
Rowley.
Please join us each and every Saturday night for exciting racing
action at the Springport Motor Speedway. Saturday, June 28th, will feature
Spectator Drags, sponsored by Charlotte Auto Dealers, along with Valvoline
Instant Oil Change Modifieds, Performance NW Sportsmans, Pure Stocks, Boss Snow
Equipment Pony Stocks, and the VROA. July 5th is Mid-Season Championship Night
for all divisions, along with Motorcycle Night (half off general admission price
if you ride your motorcycle to the track, plus a parade lap). As always, we’ll
see you at the races!

“Rowdy” Edson Rowley III took another bow in the Corrigan Oil Winner’s
Circle. Humbly, he thanked the fans who show up every week to cheer the
competitors on and thanked the owner of Springport Motor Speedway, along with
the track employees, for keeping Springport a safe and fun place to race each
and every Saturday night. Rowley exemplifies a top class racer and showed why
he’s at the top of the points charts. Rowley took the Boss Snow Equipment Pony
Stock win, notching win number six out of six. Always gracious, you’d think each
and every win was his first. Lansing’s Brad Harbenski and Matt Vainner brought
the field down for the green, but by lap three, it was all Rowley, as he drove
up through the middle of the field from his 12th place starting position. James
Hammond, of Toledo, and Steve Wrenn, of Charlotte, gave chase, but Bill McBride,
of Lansing, made his way around the duo, and tried to reel in Rowley. Jerry
LaFontaine, of Gregory, and Todd Metz Sr., of Charlotte, were duking it out for
the third spot, as Hammond tried to hold off Eaton Rapid’s J.T. Leach and
Lansing’s Lex Jarecki. With a 9.8 second margin of victory, it was Rowley,
McBride, LaFontaine, Metz, and Hammond. Wrenn and Rowley tallied heat wins for
the evening.
The Pure Stock feature was slightly reminiscent of an Enduro, as eleven
cars started the feature, but only five remained, after 20 laps. Mt. Clemen’s
Jimmy Tucker went to the point after the drop of the green, battling with Larry
Surber Jr., of Jackson, and Charlotte’s Pastor Randy Royston. With four laps in,
Jackson’s Jeremy Lutz was sent caroming into the turn one wall, retired to pit,
and returned, in the shotgun position, for the restart. Lutz worked his way up
through the field, to sit in third behind, Dimondale’s Kyle Drake and Spring
Arbor’s Jonathan Smith. The big 3/8-mile track just wasn’t big enough for Drake
and Smith, as they got together, going into turn one, and both drove up to the
wall in turn two. Smith continued on while Drake went out on the hook. Smith
tacked on to the rear of the field, handing the lead over to Lutz who had been
riding in third. Lansing’s Ian Schafer and Tucker jockeyed for the second spot,
as Smith made his way around Royston, Tucker, and Schafer to take one last run
at Lutz. Lutz out ran Smith to the line, with Schafer, Tucker, and Royston
rounding out the top five. Tucker was the highest finishing front wheel drive
competitor.
The Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans division saw Leslie’s Ron Heeney
take the heat and feature win for the division. Mason’s Scott Sigman was going
for his fifth win out of six, and gave Heeney a run for his money. Running the
majority of the race tacked on to Heeney’s bumper, Sigman made one last attempt
to duck under Heeney on lap eighteen, but couldn’t quite get it done. Okemos’
Steve Oberst ran a solid third, while Charlotte’s Matt Kirchen and Leslie’s Dave
Thorburn rounded out the top five.
The Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modified division was sixteen strong at
the Springport Motor Speedway. Missouri’s Shawn Lee and Charlotte’s Dan Loughan
scored heat wins early in the program, while Horton’s Darel Woolsey led from
wire-to-wire for the 25-lap feature win. Charlotte’s Wayne Haughton gave chase
at the drop of the green, with Deubel challenging for the second spot. Deubel
got around Haughton and went after Woolsey, who had opened up a pretty good
lead, reeling him in by lap 10. The battle for third was hard fought as
Haughton, Jackson’s Earl Miles, and Eaton Rapids’ Jason Parish ran nose-to-tail,
with Miles and Parish trying to find a way around Haughton. At the line, it was
Woolsey, who dedicated the win to the memory of his father, Deubel, Haughton,
Miles, and Parish.
Please join us each and every Saturday night for family-friendly,
exciting racing action. The scheduled June 21st Superpro show has been postponed
and the Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds will step into their slot, also
on the docket are the Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans, Pure Stocks, and
Pony Stocks. Saturday, June 28th, is Charlotte Auto Dealers Customer Night,
sponsored by the Charlotte Area Auto Dealers, featuring Performance Automotive
NW Sportsmans, Pure Stocks, Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks, and the VROA. As
always, we’ll see you at the races!

While other mid-Michigan tracks
were cancelling their shows, the Springport Motor Speedway proceeded with the
full racing program, and was able to get the entire program in, and the racing
action was as hot as the weather. Sunny skies and hot temps prevailed for a
better portion of the evening, as fifteen Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds
took to the track. Trei Deubel, of Holt, and Jason Parish, of Eaton Rapids,
brought the field down to the green, as Parish grabbed the top spot, with
Deubel, Dan Loughan, of Charlotte, and Earl Miles, of Jackson, in tow. Leroy
Ellis, of Vermontville, joined the top five. Miles took several looks to the
inside of Loughan who was running a higher line, as he was looking for a way
around Deubel. Parish was checking out on the field as Loughan made his way
around Deubel with just five laps to go. A spin on lap 23 closed the field up
behind Parish, something Parish didn’t want to see happen. On the restart,
Loughan looked to the high-side once again, and with one lap to go, the top two
ran side by side, with Loughan nipping Parish at the line for the win. Deubel,
Miles and Ellis rounded out the top five. Leslie’s Ken Buchner and Loughan made
trips to the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle for their heat wins.
The
Performance Automotive NW Sportsman division saw only six cars, with Al “Gator”
Williams making his return to the big 3/8-mile oval. Charlotte’s Matt Kirchen
took off like a shot, as the green flag waved, but Mason’s Scott Sigman charged
to the front to take the lead away, just two laps into the 20-lap feature.
Sigman ran away from the field, as Okemos’ Steve Oberst made his way around
Kirchen for second. Leslie’s Nate Moon held down the fourth spot, while Williams
came home in fifth. It was another sweep for Sigman, as he also took the heat
win, stretching his win streak to four wins out of five nights of competition.
Toledo, Ohio’s James Hammond, fresh off his first ever heat win from the
previous week, took command on the start and led the first eight laps as
Jackson’s Edson Rowley III came charging up through the field. Todd Metz Sr.
didn’t make it easy for Rowley, as he held down the second position for a number
of laps, favoring the high line that Rowley has been running. Rowley dropped to
the bottom of the track, and ducked under Metz for second. He began reeling in
Hammond, the leader, and took away the position at the halfway point. Metz drove
around Hammond and tried to keep Rowley in his sights. Lansing’s Bill McBride
had a stellar run, holding down the third position by lap 14. Caution on lap 17
closed the field up behind Rowley, but Metz and McBride had nothing for the
four-time feature winner. Make it five for Rowley at the stripe, with Metz,
McBride, Charlotte’s Steve Wrenn, and Garry Sanfilippo, of Eaton Rapids, coming
home as the top five.
Mark Carson, of Dansville, grabbed his first ever
feature win at the Springport Motor Speedway. Charlotte’s Josh Sattler and
Jackson’s Larry Surber Jr. brought the field down for the start, with Sattler
taking the lead. It was short-lived though, as Holt’s Bryan Jenks took over for
a couple of laps. Carson had already begun his march through the field and took
the lead on lap six. He had company though, as Jackson’s Jeremy Lutz pulled up
onto his back bumper. Jonathan Smith, of Spring Arbor, took a couple of looks
under Lutz for second but couldn’t get it done. Munith’s Matt Patrick tried to
chase down Smith for third, as Sattler made the pass on Jenks for fifth. At the
stripe, it was Carson, Lutz, Smith, Patrick and Sattler. Sattler was the FWD
winner, and made a trip to the Corrigan Winner’s Circle along with Carson as the
RWD winner. Smith (RWD) and Charlotte’s Pastor Randy Royston (FWD) tallied heat
wins for the evening.
Detroit’s Ed Welch went immediately to the front on
the start for the Super Mini-Cup division. Munith’s Dave Harrison ducked under
Welch for the lead at the halfway mark. Charlotte’s Maurice Randall, who started
at the rear of the field by virtue of being the fast qualifier, patiently picked
off cars to sit in second after 10-laps. Randall took away the lead on lap 16
and never looked back. Randall took the win, followed by Harrison, Welch, Baird,
and Vermontville’s Trent Jensen. Harrison and Welch won their heats.
Please join your friends and neighbors at the Springport Motor Speedway for
family-friendly, exciting racing action each and every Saturday night. Check out
our website at www.springportmotorspeedway.com for more information about
upcoming events. Saturday, June 14th will be a full show with Valvoline Instant

the races!

Performance Automotive NW
Sportsman driver, Scott Sigman, continued his reign in the Sportsman division by
scoring his third win in four weeks. East Lansing’s Jack Koone Jr. made a stop
at the Springport Motor Speedway, set fast time, but didn’t have anything for
Sigman in the 20-lap feature. It was an all Leslie front row, as Dave Thorburn
and Nate Moon brought the field down to the green, with Moon shown as the lap
one leader. Sigman wasted no time in making his bid for the lead, with Koone in
tow. The duo broke away from the field, with Okemos’ Steve Oberst joining the
top three, but Oberst was never able to reel in the top two. Moon held down the
fourth spot, while Charlotte’s Matt Kirchen, Bubber Patrick, of Stockbridge, and
Thorburn rounded out the field. Sigman made his second trip of the night to the
Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle, having won the heat race as well.
Edson
Rowley III, of Jackson, took another win in the Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stock
division, with rookies James Hammond and Michigan Center’s Marq Eaton taking
heat win honors. At the drop of the green for the 20-lap feature, Eaton jumped
out into the lead, with Eaton Rapid’s J.T. Leach tacked to his bumper. Leach
made the pass, leaving Rowley to duke it out with Eaton for the second spot,
while Charlotte’s Todd Metz Sr. caught the leaders. Leach, Rowley, and Metz ran
away from Eaton, with Rowley working his way around Leach with six laps to go,
while Metz slipped around Leach as well. Metz tried to reel in Rowley for the
win, but it was Rowley, Metz, Leach, Eaton and a stellar run by Lansing’s Bill
McBride for fifth.
Dimondale’s Kyle Drake drove to the win in the Pure
Stock 20-lap feature on the big 3/8-mile. On the start, Drake charged to the
front, to lead lap two, while Munith’s Matt Patrick and Jackson’s Jeremy Lutz
battled for the second position. Lutz took the spot away at the halfway mark,
leaving Patrick to fight off Concord’s CJ Ewing for third. Ewing and Patrick
swapped the position a couple of times, with Patrick taking the upper hand when
it counted most. Ewing came home fourth, with front-wheel drive competitor,
Bryan Jenks, of Holt, nailing down the fifth spot. Drake (RWD) and Jenks (FWD)
both made a stop in the Winner’s Circle, sponsored by Corrigan Oil. Lutz and
Jenks shared the heat win.
It was a family affair in the MCR Dwarf
division, as the McManman’s came home first and third in the Dwarf 20-lap
feature. With four lead changes, Mike McManman Sr. had his work cut out for him,
as Brian Insley took the lead at the drop of the green. Jon Wylie took command,
promptly received a speeding ticket and was sent to the rear. Eric Hoffman
inherited the lead and put some real estate between himself and the field on the
restart. McManman Sr. methodically picked off one car after another, to find
himself behind Hoffman. McManman Jr. tacked himself to his Dad’s bumper and the
two reeled in Hoffman to challenge for the lead. The McManman Sr. took away the
top spot with six laps to go, as Junior Gould and Jon Wylie, from the tail of
the field, held down the fourth and fifth spots. At the stripe, it was McManman
Sr., Hoffman, McManman Jr., Gould, and J. Wylie as the top five. Jim Miller and
Hoffman took heat wins.
The VROA division had kind of a rocky start to
their 20-lap feature, losing three cars, on two complete restarts. Once they got
underway, Rockford’s Mike Becker took the lead, with Bob Martin, of Kalamazoo,
diving under him to take the spot away. Vicksburg’s Larry Mollohan took a look
to the low side of Martin at the halfway mark, with Mollohan taking the lead
with five laps to go. Mollohan went on to win the feature, with Martin, Becker,
Jamie Gritter, and Sparta’s Rob Parker rounding out the top five. Parker and
Mollohan also took heat wins.
Please join us each and every Saturday
night for exciting racing action. June 7th will feature the Valvoline Instant
Oil Change Modifieds, Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans, Pure Stocks, the
Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks, and Mini-Cups. Our “Rollover Contest” has been
postponed until a later date. June 14th will feature the Valvoline Instant Oil
Change Modifieds, Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans, Pure Stocks, and the
Pony Stocks. Check out our website at www.springportmotorspeedway.com for more
information. As always, we’ll see you at the races!
